You can put this solution on YOUR website! This problem is best worked backward.
If she has 9 pieces left after giving half to friend 3, then friend 3 received 9 pieces. She had 18 before meeting him.
If she had 18 pieces after giving a third to friend 2, then friend 2 received 9 pieces. She had 27 before meeting her.
If she had 27 pieces after giving half to friend 1, then friend 1 received 27 pieces. She had 54 before meeting him.

54/2 = 27
27/3 = 9 (9 to the friend; the other 18 to herself)
18/2 = 9
