Question 88434: Find the median; 1,4,9,15,25,36
Find the mode; 41,43,56,67,69,72
Find the mode; 9,18,10,9,9,10,8
A sales person drove 238,159,87,163,198 miles on a 5 day trip. What was the mean number of miles driven per day?
The following scores were recorded on a 200 point final exam 193,185,163,186,192,135,158,174,188,172,168,183,195,165,183

You can put this solution on YOUR website! "Find the median; 1,4,9,15,25,36 "
To find the median, count off about 3 spaces (just take half of the size of the list, which is 6) from the beginning of the list until you hit the middle. Now count count off about 3 spaces from the end of the list until you hit the middle.
1, 4, , , 25, 36
Since the middle is in between the numbers9 and15, add them up and divide that sum by 2.
So the median is 12

"Find the mode; 41,43,56,67,69,72"
To find the mode, simply look for any repeating numbers. If there is one number that occurs more frequently than any other number, then that number is the mode.
Since there isn't a number that repeats itself more than once, there isn't a mode in this list

"Find the mode; 9,18,10,9,9,10,8"
To find the mode, simply look for any repeating numbers. If there is one number that occurs more frequently than any other number, then that number is the mode.
Since 9 repeats itself 3 times (which is more frequent than any other number), the mode is 9
So the mode is 9

"A sales person drove 238,159,87,163,198 miles on a 5 day trip. What was the mean number of miles driven per day? "
To find the mean, add up all of the numbers and divide the sum by the number of numbers (which in this case is 5).
So the mean is 169

"The following scores were recorded on a 200 point final exam 193,185,163,186,192,135,158,174,188,172,168,183,195,165,183
A) Find the mean final examination score
B) Find the median final examination score
C) Is the mean or median a more useful representative of the final examination scores?"
First sort the numbers into ascending order (from least to greatest):
135,158,163,165,168,172,174,183,185,186,188,192,193,195
A)
To find the mean, add up all of the numbers and divide the sum by the number of numbers (which in this case is 14).
So the mean is 175.5
B)
To find the median, count off about 7 spaces (just take half of the size of the list, which is 14) from the beginning of the list until you hit the middle. Now count count off about 7 spaces from the end of the list until you hit the middle.
135, 158, 163, 165, 168, 172, , , 185, 186, 188, 192, 193, 195
Since the middle is in between the numbers 174 and 183, add them up and divide that sum by 2.
So the median is 178.5
C) Since the mean utilizes every number in the set, the mean is the most reliable at representing the average of the data.
