: The A train goes 12mph slower than the E train. The A train travels 230 mi in the same time that the E train travels 290 mil. Find the speed of each train.
I am lost in how to set up the equation to be able to solve to find the speed of each train.
Thank you This question is from textbook Intermediate Algebra Graph and models
You can put this solution on YOUR website! Use formula for time
Since each train travels for the same time, we'll set them equal to each other.
rate for E train = x
rate for A train = (x-12) since it travels 12mph slower.
your equation
cross multiply
230x=290(x-12)
230x=-290x-3480
-60x=-3480
x=58
So, rate for E train is 58mph and since the A train is 12mph slower, its rate is 46mph.
Good luck!
