You can put this solution on YOUR website! A penguin and a seal are housed in the same cage. The cage was unlocked. At 3 PM, the penguin left the cage, heading North at 4 miles per hour. At 3:30 PM, the seal left the cage, heading South at 3 miles per hour. At what time will the penguin and the seal be 37 miles apart?
-------
Penquin DATA:
rate = 4 mph ; time = x hrs ; distance = 4x miles
-------
Seal DATA:
rate = 3 mph ; time = (x-(1/2))hr ; distance = 3(x-(1/2)) miles
-------
Equation:
dist + dist = 37 miles
4x + 3x - (3/2) = 37
7x = 38.5
x = 5.5 hours
----------------------
Note: Since "x" is the time for the penguin,
the answer is 3:00PM + 5.5 hrs = 8:30PM
--------------------------------------------
My answer choices are
F. 8 PM. G. 8:30 PM H. 9 pm. J. 12 AM. K. 3 am
Cheers,
Stan H.
