| Question 883307: I am having some difficulty with this problem below and I could use assistance!
 Flying against the wind, an airplane travels 6120 km in 9 hours. Flying with the wind, the same plane travels 2940 km in 3 hours. What is the rate of the plane in still air and what is the rate of the wind?

You can put this solution on YOUR website! Flying against the wind, an airplane travels 6120 km in 9 hours. Flying with the wind, the same plane travels 2940 km in 3 hours. What is the rate of the plane in still air and what is the rate of the wind? -----
 rate against the wind = 6120/9 = 680 km/h
 rate with the wind = 2940/3 = 980 km/h
 --------------------
 Equations:
 p + w = 980
 p - w = 680
 ----
 Add and solve for plane speed:
 2p = 1660
 p = 830 km/h (plane speed in still air)
 ----
 Solve for "w":
 2w = 300
 w = 150 km/h (speed of the wind)
 ----------------------------------
