Question 883278: Approximately how long would it take a boat rowed by 5 adults through still water to travel 500 miles?
I realize that this is not exactly a math problem; I'm writing a novel in which the above journey happens and I'm having trouble figuring out how long it would take them. Thank you so much in advance to anyone who can help me! Answer by josmiceli(19441) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! This is more of a physics problem than
a math problem.
(1) How good are they at team rowing?
(2) How well suited to the boat are the oars?
(3) How well designed is the boat?
(4) What condition is the boat in?
(5) Is there wind? From what direction?
(6) Is the sea rough or calm?
(7) Are they starving or thirsty?
(8) Some will need periodic breaks.
Is there room to lie down in the boat?
(9) Are they being followed or completely on their own?
(10) Can they navigate without stopping?
(11) Can they navigate at night?
(12) Are they all equally fit?

There are probably more things to consider, but
all will have a bearing on it. You could have all
ideal cases and get some kind of a physics answer
probably from a physicist/rower
