Question 881235: The sum of two positive numbers is 36 and twice the first number added to their product is 224. Find the numbers (they are not necessarily integers).
I am trying to find out how to write this as an equation so it can be solved?

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Transcribe your description into symbols.
Be very careful with using pronouns in your descriptions because if not used well, the description can become imprecise.

Two numbers, m and n.
m+n=36.
2m+mn=224.

Let the first number be F
Then 2nd is: 36 – F
Therefore, 2F + F(36 – F) = 224
2F+%2B+36F+-+F%5E2+=+224
F%5E2+-+38F++%2B+224+=+0
Solve this quadratic to get TWO VALUES for the first number. Then determine the TWO VALUES for the 2nd number.
Then do a check!!
