Question 881141: a truck contained 35 boxes, some weighing 6 pounds and the rest weighing 10 pounds. if the total weight of the boxes was 262 pounds, find the number of each type of box in the truck
Answer by algebrahouse.com(1659) About Me  (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
x = number of 6 pound boxes
35 - x = number of 10 pound boxes {there are 35 boxes}

6x + 10(35 - x) = 262 {weight of each box multiplied by number of boxes equals total weight}
6x + 350 - 10x = 262 {used distributive property}
-4x + 350 = 262 {combined like terms}
-4x = -88 {subtracted 350 from each side}
x = 22 {divided each side by -4}
35 - x = 13 {substituted 22, in for x, into 35 - x}

22 six pound boxes
13 ten pound boxes
