Question 87741: Help! I'm having difficulties figuring this problem out! Thank you in advance for your help!
The length of a rectangle is 1 cm more than 2 times its width. If the area of the rectangle is 76 cm^2, find the dimensions of the rectangle to the nearest thousandth.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!

Let the width of the rectangle be=xcms
the length of the rectangle(l) =2x+1 cms
area of the rectangle=l.b=76 cms^2
l.b=76 i.e (2x+1).x=76 2x^2+x-76=0

since the factors cannot be found we factorise the eq'nusing the formula
we get two values for x x=5.9 & x=-6.4
we consider the +ve value for x width = 5.9cms = 0.059mts
length = 2(5.9)+1=11.8+1 12.8 = 0.128mts
