Question 876849: Hi! I'm an algebra one student and I am having trouble with word problems. My teacher has tried to show me how to do them with charts but I don't like it that way. I was wondering if you could help me with this one: The population of birds at the zoo is currently 589, which is 24% more than last year. How many birds were there last year?
Thanks!!

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
I don't like charts either.

Let x be the number of birds last year. The problem says that the number of birds increased by 24% to 589, so we have 589 = 1.24x. Dividing both sides by 1.24 we have x = 589/1.24 = 475.
