two people are arguing about the ladder that the worker is carrying (which is 12m long) and one of them says if they put it 10m from the bottom of the street lights it will be enough to reach the top of the light while the other says it will not be enough
use the theorem of Pythagoras
will a ladder of 12m length be enough to reach the height of 20m if put 10m away from the bottom end

sqrt(12^2 - 10^2) = 6.6 hardly long enough:)

The ladder will form the hypotenuse of the right triangle.
The hypotenuse is the longest side of a right triangle but the ladder is shorter than the 20 m height. Therefore, the ladder is not long enough no matter how far you place it from the bottom of the pole.
