Question 87283: 3. In captivity, the average life span of a grizzly bear is 9 years more than that of a tiger. The sum of the two average life spans is 41 years. Find the average life span of a tiger in captivity.
a. Define the variables.
A = average sum
B = bears life span
T = tiger life span
b. Write the expression for the life span of a grizzly bear in terms of the life span of a tiger.
A = B + T and
T = B - 9
c. Write an equation for the sum of their life spans in term of one variable.
A = B+T
41=
d. Solve the equation for the life span of a tiger.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Tigers life span = T. Since the bear has a life span 9 years longer than the tiger, B = T+9. Both life spans are equal to 41 years.
T+(T+9)=41
2T+9=41
2T+9-9=41-9
2T=32
2T/2=32/2
T=16
So average tiger is 16 and bear is 25 since their average life is 9 years longer.
Good luck!
