Five less than twice a number is 23. What is the number ?
Let the number be x.
Twice the number is therefore 2x.
2x - 5 = 23
Add 5 to each side of the equation.
2x - 5 + 5 = 23 + 5
-5 + 5 = 0
23 + 5 = 28
2x = 28
Divide each side by 2
2x/2 = 28/2
x = 14

Check:
2x - 5 = 23
2(14) - 5 = 23
28 - 5 = 23


Answer:
x = 14
