Question 87135: The length of a rectangle is 3 in. more than the width. The perimeter of the rectangle is 24 in.
a. Define the variables.
b.Write the expression for the length in terms of the width.
c. Substitute what you know into equation. Be sure you only have one variable.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!

a. Define the variables.

Let w=width of rectangle
Then l=w+3=length of rectangle
b.Write the expression for the length in terms of the width.
l=w+3
c. Substitute what you know into equation. Be sure you only have one variable.
perimeter equals 2w+2l(but l=w+3)=24 in, so--
2w+2(w+3)=24 get rid of parens
2w+2w+6=24 subtract 6 from both sides
2w+2w+6-6=24-6 collect like terms
4w=18 divide both sides by 4
w=4.5 in-------------------width of rectang;e
w=l+3=4.5+3=7.5 in ---------LENGTH OF RECTANGLE
CK
24=2(4.5)+2(7.5)
24=9+15
24=24
