Those require knowing synthetic division. If an alternative is permitted, this would be polynomial division. Explaining synthetic division here is very difficult, but a mostly easy process.

Your number 17 looks like %28x%5E3%2B5x%5E2%2Bx-15%29%2F%28x%2B3%29. Synthetic division is a way to check a possible "root" of -3. Write the dividend as the row of coefficients; and show the root to test to the left of the dividend.
