a metallurgist needs to make 2 lbs of alloy containing 55% silver, he is going to melt and combine one metal that contains 60% silver, with another metal, which is 40% silver, how much of each metal should he use?

Alloy I 60.00% ---------------- x pounds
Alloy II 40.00% ------ 2 - x pounds
Mixture 55.00% ---------------- 2
Total 2 pounds
60.00% x + 40.00% ( 2 - x ) = 55.00% * 2
60 x + 40 ( 2 - x ) = 110
60 x + 80 - 40 x = 110
60 x - 40 x = 110 - -80
20 x = 30
/ 20
x = 1.5 pounds 60.00% Alloy I
0.5 pounds 40.00% Alloy II
