You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Martina leaves home at 9 A.M., bicycling at a rate of
24 mi/h. Two hours later, John leaves, driving at the rate of 48 mi/h. At what time will John catch up with Martina?
:
Let t = J's traveling time
Then
(t+2) = M's traveling time
:
We know that when J catches up with M, they will have traveled the same distance
Using this fact, write a distance equation: Dist = speed * time
:
J's distance = M's distance
48t = 24(t+2)
:
48t = 24t + 48
:
48t - 24t = 48
:
24t = 48
:
t = 2 hrs, traveling time of J
:
Time on the clock: 9 + 2 + 2 = 13 or 1 PM
:
:
Check solution using distances (M's time is 4hr)
2*48 = 4*24
