Question 86339: Solve the following word problems. Be sure to show the equation you use for the solution.
Science and medicine. A bicyclist rode into the country for 5 h. In returning, her speed was 5 mi/h faster and the trip took 4 h. What was her speed each way?

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Distance(d) equals Rate(r) times Time(t) or d=rt; r=d/t and t=d/r
Let r=her rate (speed) going into the country
Then r+5=her speed in returning
Distance going=Distance returning
Distance going=rate going times time
Distance going=r*5
Distance returning=rate returning times time
Distance returning=(r+5)*4
So--
5r=4(r+5) get rid of parens
5r=4r+20 subtract 4r from both sides
5r-4r=4r-4r+20 collect like terms
r=20 mi/h---------------------speed going into the country
r+5=20+5=25 mi/h----------------speed returning
CK
20*5=25*4
100=100

Hope this helps----ptaylor
