Question 86285: Hello:
I am in a pre ca class and have a problem I just do not understand how to work. Math is not my best skill anyway. i am lost.
Here it is
sq root sign and under it is x^2 - 10x + 28 = 2. the =2 is not under the sq. root sign.
Can you work this for me where I can understand the steps. I am very poor at factoring.

You can put this solution on YOUR website! sq root sign and under it is x^2 - 10x + 28 = 2. the =2 is not under the sq. root sign.
: = 2
:
Square both sides of the equation and you have:
x^2 - 10x + 28 = 4
:
x^2 - 10x + 28 - 4 = 0; subtract 4 from both sides
:
x^2 - 10x + 24 = 0
:
Easily factored; look for two factors of 24 which add up to -10: -4 and -6
(x - 4)(x - 6) = 0
:
x = +4
and
x = +6
:
:
You can check your solutions by substituting 4 for x in the original eq: = 2 = 2 = 2
:
Do the same with x = 6
