Question 859551: Solve the equation. Round to 2 decimal places if needed.
log(x)+log(3x-1)=1
I guess this one is confusing me because there isn't a base after the log. I know that I have to multiply (x)and(3x-1) because it is an addition problem, but not sure if I do that first or what to do.
Thanks in advance for the help. Answer by ewatrrr(24785) (Show Source):
Hi,
no base 'after log' generally indicates base 10
log(x)+log(3x-1)=1
log(x)(3x-1)=1
x(3x-1) = 10
3x^2 - x - 10 = 0
(3x + 5)(x - 2) = 0,
x = 2 (negative solution is an extraneous root)
