Question 859431: Hi! I'm having some difficulty understanding how this question was worked out because it is not shown. Can you please explain it to me?
Thank you so much for your help in advanced!
The question states, "Three girls are playing Scrabble. At the end of the game, the total of their scores add up to 504. Annie scores 10% more than Benita, while Cham scores 60% of the combined scores of the other two. What did each player score?"
The answers to this questions are:
A = 177
B = 161
C = 202

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Oh, great. You screwed me :P
You meant 540! Not 504. I got 150 and figured out something isn't right. Then I saw the answers add up to 540... Be a little more careful with the numbers. The answer kinda depends on them :) So let's go:

You have three unknown things: Annie's, Benita's, and Cham's points.
So you will set up three equations with three variables to solve for (A, B, and C for their names, how convenient.

At the end of the game, the total of their scores add up to 540.
A+%2B+B+%2B+C+=+540

Annie scores 10% more than Benita.
A+=+1.1B

Cham scores 60% of the combined scores of the other two.
C+=+0.6%28A+%2B+B%29

As A equals 1.1B from the second equation, you plug in 1.1B in the place of A in the other two equations.

1.1B+%2B+B+%2B+C+=+540 or 2.1B+%2B+C+=+540
C+=+0.6%281.1B+%2B+B%29 or C+=+1.26B
As you see, A is eliminated here and you have a system of two equations, where you solve for B and C.

Plug in 1.26B in the place of C in the first equation:
2.1B+%2B+1.26B+=+540
3.36B+=+540
B+=+160.7
Um... I'm not sure how this is supposed to turn up but I guess they rounded it off, which makes sense.
B+=+161

A+=+1.1B
A+=+177.1
A+=+177

C+=+540+-+A+-+B
C+=+202

Annie got 177 pts, Benita 161 and Cham 202.

Check... Do they add up to 540? they do.

Is Annie's score 110% of Benita's?
177%2F161+=+1.099+=+110%25

Is Cham's score 60% of Annie's and Benita's together?
202%2F%28161+%2B+177%29+=+0.597+=+60%25

(rounded)

All good!
