Question 858953: A quarterback throws a pass that travels 40 yards with the wind in 2.5 seconds. If he had thrown the same pass against the wind, the football would have traveled 20 yards in 1.7 seconds. Find the speed of a pass that the quarterback would throw if there was no wind.
I know speed=distance traveled/time of travel so I did:
40/2.5=16.5
20/1.7=11.8
16.5-11.8=4.2 for the speed of the wind but i'm not sure how to find the distance traveled with no wind.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
let speed with no wind be x
and speed of wind be y
40/2.5=16.5
x+y=16.5
20/1.7=11.8
x-y=11.8
add the equations
2x=28.3
x= 14.15 yards/s -speed in still air
speed of wind = 16.5-14.15 = 2.35yards/s
