You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Train A is traveling 8 km/hr faster than train B. Both trains start at the same time at opposite ends of a 50 km long track and are traveling towards each other. They meet after 17 minutes of travel. What are the trains' speed of travel?
:
Let x = speed of Train B
Then
(x+8) = speed of Train A
:
We know when they meet, they will have traveled a total 50 km, both will have traveled for 17 min.
Change 17 min to hrs; 17/60 hrs
:
Distance = time * speed
:
Train A dist + Train B dist = 50
%2817%2F60%29%28x%2B8%29 + %2817%2F60%29x = 50
:
Get rid of the denominators, multiply equation by 60
17(x+8) + 17x = 60(50)
:
17x + 136 + 17x = 3000
:
34x = 3000 - 136
:
x = 2864/34
:
x = 84.2353 km/hr, speed of Train B
:
84.2353 + 8 = 92.2353 km/hr speed of train A
:
:
Check our solution
Train B dist: (17/60)*84.2353 = 23.867
Train A dist: (17/60)*82.2353 = 26.133
--------------------------------------
Total distance of both trains = 50 km
