Question 857770: PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!
Which of the following equations below is for an ellipse and which is for a hyperbola? Demonstrate by explaining or showing how you can tell the difference without using a graphing calculator.
A). 4y^2=144+16x^2
B). 4y^2+16x^2=144 Answer by josgarithmetic(39620) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! Both equations have x^2 terms and y^2 terms. Put each into a standard form for conic section. The ellipse will be a sum of terms and a hyperbola will be a difference of terms. One of the members must be 1 on each equation. Be sure then, that you divide each of your given equations by 144.
