Question 856984: Alice is in a 20-km race. She always runs the first half at an average speed of 2 km/h faster than the second half.
a.) Let 'x' represent her speed in the first half. Determine a simplified expression in terms of 'x' for the total time needed to run the race.
b.) If Alice runs the first half at 10 km/h, how long will it take her to run the race, to the nearest tenth of an hor.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!

Hi,
Re Reply
a) 10km%2Fx+%2B+10km%2F%28x-2kmph%29 = time
b) 10km%2F%2810kmph%29+%2B+10km%2F%288kmph%29 = 1 + 5/4 hr 0r 2hr 15min
My set up would have been using (x+2) for the first half speed and x for the second half.
Result the same, of course. always encourage people to "write" as they read.
10%2F%28x%2B2%29+%2B+10%2Fx+= time
(x+2) = 10 ⇒ x = 8
10/10 + 10/8 = 1 54 hr
