Let x = selling price of the item only


(selling price of the item only) + (4% of selling price of the item only) = Total Sale Price(with tax)


x + 0.04*x = 988


1.04*x = 988


x = 988/1.04


x = 950


So the item costs $950 and this is without sales tax added on.
