Question 853687: This problem is from a book printed in 1828. It is supposed to be set up using modern methods which is what we would use today. I am completly lost. The question is "A,B and C. joined their stock and gained 360 dollars of which A took up a certain sum, B took 3 1/2 times as much as A, and C took up as much as A and B both; wht share of the gain had each".
I started to try to solve it and came up with this so far:
X= A's Share
B= x/3 1/2
C= X+B
X + x/3 1/2+ X + B=360.
Can you please help me out on this problem. I really am very lost.
Thanks,

You can put this solution on YOUR website! If A takes x
Then B takes 3.5x
and C takes 4.5x
x+3.5x+4.5x= 360
9x=360
x=40
A-40
B=3.5*40= 140
C=180
