Question 853335: When flying directly into a 25mph wind it takes an aircraft 1 hour longer to travel 300 miles than when there is no wind. Find the time required for the aircraft to fly this distance in no wind. Answer by mananth(16946) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! let the speed with no wind be x mph
speed against wind = (x-25)
distance = 300 miles
according to the condition
Time against wind - time with no wind = 1
300/(x-25) - 300/x = 1
Take the LCM
300x-300(x-25) = x(x-25)
300x-300x+7500= x^2- 25x
x^2-25x-7500=0
x^2-100x+75x-7500=0
x(x-100)+75(x-100)=0
(x-100)(x+75) =0
taking the positive value x = 100
speed with no wind = 100 mph
d=300
speed = 100
t= 3 hours
