Let's find a common denominator first. What number do both 10 and 6 go into? I can see right off that 30 will work (it doesn't HAVE to be the lowest common denominator; you can always reduce later).
3%2F10= how many 30ths? Multiply top and bottom by 3 to get 9%2F30
1%2F6= how many 30ths? Multiply top and bottom by 5 to get 5%2F30
Add them together
9%2F30+5%2F30=14%2F30
If he spends 14%2F30, then there will be 30-14, or 16%2F30left over.
What number can you reduce that fraction to?
