Question 853039: A student drives from her house to the airport at an average speed of 45 mph. She spent 60 minutes at the airport before her plane lifted off. The airplane flew from her airport to Ft. Lauderdale at and average speed of 380 mph. The entire distance traveled was 850 miles; the entire trip took 5 hours. Find the distance from the airport to the student's home to the nearest mile.
I originally set up the problem as 45x=850, giving me a result of x=~19 miles but that just doesn't feel right to me.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
There are three stages to this problem
1-the time and distance to the airport time x *45=d
2- time sent at the airport and 60 minutes or one hour
3-time and distance flying 380a=f
x+1+a=5,
d+f=850,
45x=d,
380a=f
four equations with four unknowns
a = 2, d = 90, f = 760, x = 2
1-She drove for 2 hours at 45 mph for a distance of 90 miles.
2-1 hour at the airport
3- she flew 2 hours at 380 for a distance of 760
So the answer to the only question is 90 miles tot he airport from her house.
