Question states*** CENTS make sense

 10x + 5(24-x) = 205 cents

 10x + 120 - 5x = 205

       5x =  85

        x = 17, number of dimes. 7 nickles

CHECKING our answer***

 170 + 35 = 205 cents or $2.05
