Question 850652: A marathon is a foot race that covers a course of about 26.2 mi. The world record time in the women's marathon is held by Paula Radcliffe of Great Britain. At one point in her record-setting race, she was three times as far from the end of the course as she was from the starting point. How many miles had she run at that time?
I keep thinking that for this problem we would have to set it up in a type of equation. I am not to sure I am correct.
3x =26.2
or it does say it is three times from the end point as she was from the starting point. Should I then divide it by 2?
You can put this solution on YOUR website! 2 hours 15.25 minutes for 26.2 miles. Amazing!
.
The total distance has to equal 26.2
Let x be the distance from the end
Let y be the distance from the starting point
X + Y = 26.2
3X = Y
Substitute the value of Y into the equation
x + 3x = 26.2
4x = 26.2
Divide each side by 4
x = 6.55
If x = 6.55, then y = 6.55 * 3 = 19.65
X & y together should be 26.2
6.55 + 19.65 = 26.2
Success!

Do you know where Radcliffe set her record? 2003 London Marathon.
