Question 848325: Please help, I am having problems solving this problem: Plane A leaves an airport in Toronto at 10am. Plane B leaves at 11am from the same airport on the same course and overtakes Plane A in 2.5 hours, if the average speed of Plane B is 300km/hr faster than Plane A, find the speed of each.
Thanks

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
_______________speed__________time_________distance
Plane A________r______________t+1
Plane B________r+300__________2.5

Think carefully about this. The travel time for B is t. The difference in time quantities between the two planes is 1 hour, plane A requiring one hour more than plane B.

_______________speed__________time_________distance
Plane A________r______________2.5%2B1=3.5____d=r%2A3.5
Plane B________r+300__________2.5__________d=%28r%2B300%29%2A%282.5%29

The two distances, d, are equal. Find r.

time taken by plane A for certain distance is 3.5 and Plane B takes 2.5 to cover the same distance.
Let the speed of Plane A be x then plane B is x+300
Distance = speed* time
x*3.5 = 2.5(x+300)
3.5x = 2.5x + 750
x = 750
Speed of Plane A is 750 km/hr and speed of Plane B is 750+300 = 1050 km/hr
