Seventh Grade Pre-Algebra ‘
Weighin’In
James, Henry, and Simon are volunteering on a farm for a long weekend.
They walk into the barn, notice a scale used to weigh cattle, and decide to weigh themselves. However, the scale begins at 100 kg, and no one boy weighs more than 100 kg– even James who was sure that he weighed the most. They decide to weigh themselves in pairs and found these amounts.
Henry + Simon = 132 kg
Simon + James=151 kg
James + Henry= 137 kg
What did each boy weigh in pounds?

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
H + S = 132
S + J = 151
J + H = 137
Call these equations 1,2,3.
From equation 1:
H = 132-S (eq 4)
Substitute into eq 3:
J + 132-S = 137
J - S = 5 (eq 5)
Adding together (2) and (5)
J+S = 151
J-S = 5
----------
2J = 156
J = 78
Back to eq 5
78 - S = 5
S = 73
Back to eq 1
H + 73 = 132
H = 59
