Actually the numerator does factor. You probably made an error.
x%5E2+-+3x+-+18 = %28x+-+6%29%2A+%28x+%2B+3%29
So :- %28x%5E2+-+3x+-+18%29%2F%28x+-+6%29 = %28%28x+-6%29+%2A+%28x+%2B+3%29%29%2F%28x+-+6%29
= x + 3
