There are 20 sugar AND chocolate cookies
The ratio you are given says:
( chocolate ) / ( sugar ) = 2/3
I can say:
( chocolate ) / ( chocolate + sugar ) = 2 / ( 2 + 3 )
Let +c+ = number of chocolate cookies
+c+%2F+20+=+2%2F5+
Multiply both sides by +20+
+c+=+8+
She has 8 chocolate cookies
check:
There must be +20+-+8+=+12+ sugar cookies
+12%2F20+=+3%2F5+
3/5 are sugar cookies
