Let x=the number
5x=five times the number
5x+4=five times the number added to 4
x+4=the number plus 4. So our equation to solve is:
(5x+4)/(x+4)=9/2 multiply each side by 2(x+4)
2(5x+4)=9(x+4) simplify
10x+8=9x+36 subtract 9x and also 8 from each side
10x-9x+8-8=9x-9x+36-8 collect like terms
x=28
