Question 844671: A 25% iodine solution is to be mixed with a 75% iodine solution to produce 5 gallons of a 70% iodine solution. How many gallons of each solution are needed?
I wrote 2 equations, but got an unreasonable answer. Now I'm not really sure what to do. My equations were: x+y=5 and 0.25x + 0.75y= 0.70.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!

Hi,
x+y=5 0r x = (5-y) and 0.25x+%2B+0.75y=+0.70%2A5gal
0.25%285-y%29+%2B+0.75y+=+0.70%2A5gal
y = 0.45*5gal / .5 = 4.5gal, amount of 75% solution and then find (5-y) for the 25% solution
