You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let s = side of the square
A = area
The problem states (dimensions in cm)
%28s+-+2%29%5E2+=+A+-+36
s%5E2+-+4s+%2B+4+=+A+-+36
About the original square, we know that
A+=+s%5E2 , so
s%5E2+-+4s+%2B+4+=+s%5E2+-+36
subtract s%5E2 from both sides
-4s+%2B+4+=+-36
-4s+=+-40
s+=+10
check
does A+=+s%5E2?
%28s+-+2%29%5E2+=+A+-+36
%2810+-+2%29%5E2+=+A+-+36
64+=+A+-+36
A+=+64+%2B+36
A+=+100
OK
