Let x and y represent the cost of the post and panels respectively:

Question states***

 5x + 5y = 122

 5x + 10y = 230



- 5x - 5y = -122    \multiplying 1st EQ by -1 and adding to the 2nd EQ to eliminate x

 5x + 10y = 230

        5y = 108

         y = $21.60 is the cost of a panel

and  5x + 10(21.60) = 230

           5x = 14

            x = $2.80  is the cost of each post

How much are 4 fence post and 3 fence panels?

    4($2.50) + 3($21.60)
