Question 842060: A piggy bank has 34 coins. There are four quarters, twice as many nickels as quarters, and the rest are dimes. How much money is inside it?
So far what I've done is multiplied 4 x .25 which equals $1.00. I'm stuck on the second part, "twice as many nickels as quarters" I don't know what to multiply. Found 2 solutions by josgarithmetic, MathTherapy:Answer by josgarithmetic(39629) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! q = how many quarters
n = how many nickels
d = how many dimes
-
1 quarter = 0.25 dollar
1 nickel = 0.05 dollar
1 dime = 0.10 dollar
FORMING EQUATIONS
Thirty-four coints in bank, ;
Four quarters, ;
Twice as many nickels as quarters, ;
Those equations are now enough for solving for n and d.
The value of q is already given, so you will quickly obtain TWO equations in TWO unknowns.
-
Notice that the coin conversion factors will not be needed.

Number of quarters: 4
Number of nickels: 2(4), or 8 ----- Twice as many nickels as quarters
Number of dimes: 34 - (4 + 8), or 34 - 12
I'm sure you can figure out the rest!!
