Question 841339: A drama club sold 500 student and adult tickets to their play. Adult tickets cost $5 and student tickets cost $2.50. The total income was $1362.50. Set up two variables and 2 equations to determine the number of adult and student tickets sold.
My first thought was to set it up as

You can put this solution on YOUR website!

Hi
Excellent on:
x= adult tickets
500-x= student tickets
Instructor is calling for 'two' variables:
x= adult tickets
y = student tickets = 500-x :)
Question states***The total income was $1362.50
5x + 2.50y = 1362.50
5x + 2.50(500-x) = 1362.50 |Substitute for 'y'
5x + 1250 -2.50x = 1362.50
2.50x = 112.50
x = 45, number of Adult tickets. 455 student tickets
CHECKING our answer***
$225 + $1137.50 = $1362.50
