Question states***

He worked 48 hours with 8 of the hours being paid at the overtime rate 

which is one and one half times the regular rate and earned $494

 40x + 8(3/2)x = 494

  40x + 12x = $494

       52x = $494

         x = $9.50/hr

CHECKING our answer***

40%2A9.50+%2B+8%2A14.25+ = $494
