Question 841273: A square vegetable garden is to be tilled and then enclosed with a fence. If the fence costs $4.00 per foot and the cost of preparing the soil is $0.60 per ft2, determine the size of the garden that can be enclosed for $560.00. Answer by hamsanash1981@gmail.com(151) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! let the side of the square vegetable garden be a. Area of the garden = a^2 and the enclosed fencing, ie., perimeter = 4a.
Given that cost of fence per foot is $4.00 the total cost of fencing will be 4*4a
= 16a
cost for preparing soil is 0.6 per foot^2 = 0.6*a^2
Total cost that can be enclosed = 560
then Cost of fencing + cost of perparing soil =560
16a+0.6a^2 = 560
multiplying the above by 10/2
80a + 3a^2 = 2800
3a^2+80a - 2800 = 0
factorizing the eqaution we have a = 20
