 (x-21) + x = 67

  x - 21 + x = 67

   2x-21 = 67     |Combining Like terms

   2x = 67+21     |Adding 21 to both sides of the EQ

   2x = 78

    x = 39, the larger number.  The smaller number is 18.   39-21

  39 + 18 = 57
