what is the best way to figure out what x is?

By performing 'allowable Operations to 'isolate' x on ONE side of the Equal Sign:

So we can READ x = (it's value)

-3x-19=5-2x       |Adding 3x to both sides of the Equation  

   -19 = 5 + x    |Adding -5 to both sides of the Equation

   -24 = x       

YES!

   x = -24 

CHECKING our answer***

72-19 = 5+48 = 53
