You can put this solution on YOUR website!
presumably the number of children is not counted in the number of gents and ladies.
you have:
1/7 = children
3/5 = gents
since the total must be equal to 1, you have:
1/7 + 3/5 + x = 1
convert to the least common multiple to get:
5/35 + 21/35 + x = 35/35
simplify to get:
26/35 + x = 35/35
solve for x to get:
x = 35 - 26 = 9

you now have:
5/35 + 21/35 + 9/35 = 35/35

9/35 of the total is equal to ladies which is equal to 360.

let y equal the number of people on the train.

9/35 * y = 360
solve for y to get:
y = 360 * 35 / 9 which makes y = 1400

there were 1400 people on the train.

1/7 * 1400 = children = 200
3/5 * 1400 = gents = 840
9/35 * 1400 = ladies = 360

numbers check out so the answer is that the total number of passengers on the train was 1400.
