the sum of a number and 3 is subtracted from 10 the result is 5.
10 - (n + 3) = 5
remove brackets, a neg outside changes the signs
10 - n - 3 = 5
-n + 7 = 5
-n = 5 - 7
-n = -2
therefore
n = 2
