x = first number
y = second number
x + y = 59
x = 5y - 7
substitute (5y -7) for x in x + y = 59
(5y -7) + y = 59
6y -7 = 59
add 7 to each side
6y = 66
divide each side by 6
y = 11
Since x = 5y -7
x = 5(11) - 7
x = 55 -7
x = 48
So our numbers are 11 and 48
