Question 834973: Eva planted 1/2 of her garden with eggplant.how many tenths of garden are planted with eggplant?
Answer by KMST(5328) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! This is Eva's garden, divided into two equal parts (halves) by that red line:
of Eva's garden is planted with eggplant.
Sorry, since I skipped kindergarten, I never quite learned to color within the lines.
Now I am drawing blue lines. The red and blue lines divide Eva's garden into equal parts. Each one of those parts is (one tenth) of Eva's garden.
(five thenths) of Eva's garden is planted with eggplant.
As I drew the blue lines,
I made times as many parts out of the planted area,
and I made times as many parts out of the whole garden.

The numerator (1) of the fraction 1/2,
and the denominator (2) of the fraction 1/2,
got multiplied by the same number (5).
As a consequence, the fraction looks different, but it is the same number,
just like saying 6 eggs is the same as saying half a dozen eggs.
